What's a Paralegal?
In Ontario, a Licensed Paralegal Can Represent You in Most of These Cases.
A paralegal licensed by the Law Society of Ontario has the legal right to represent clients in traffic court, provincial offences court, Small Claims Court, the Landlord and Tenant Board, and on summary conviction matters under the Criminal Code. That is not a workaround — it is a formally regulated scope of practice.
The advantage for you is cost. A paralegal's rate is typically a fraction of a lawyer's for the exact same courtroom. The quality of the advocacy depends on the person you hire, not the title.
For matters outside paralegal scope — divorce, wills, real estate, indictable criminal charges, family custody — we'll refer you to a trusted lawyer. No fee for the referral.
